SPRINGFIELD – Mary Katherine Nachtwey, 88, died peacefully at home in Springfield on November 15. She was surrounded by her ten children and most of her 14 grandchildren. Mary was under Hospice Care from St. John’s Hospital, which also supported the passing four years earlier of her husband Dr. Robert Nachtwey. They were married 60 years.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, November 17, 2009, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Kirlin-Egan and Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield. A prayer service will begin at 4 p.m. followed by a celebration of Mary’s long and rich life.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m.

Natalie and I had a great time visiting Mom the weekend of 9/13. Kate was also visiting and did yeoman’s duty. I was very impressed by the concerted efforts of Jim, Karen, Matt and Lou – without those folks I’m not sure how any of us could manage!

The work load is immense and continuous and it’s my understanding that we now have a new face on the scene – Kristin – who’s going to be shouldering more-and-more of the day-to-day responsibility. It’s important that we all keep in touch with her so we can be informed about the homefront as well as to learn how we can contribute to its domestic well-being. So thanks, Kristin, for your willingness to step up. Please don’t be shy about letting folks know what’s needed in Spfld. so we can all pitch in and do our part!

I am happy to have had the pleasure of treating my niece Kristin to her first therapeutic massage today at my office/home. I extend this invetation to any and all family members. PLease feel free to contact me and schedule a time for yourself. This is free of charge and it would be my pleasure!! Kate went back to CA this morning, what a contribution she is to our family and mothers welfare. Of course when I got back home at 6:10 AM mother was waiting for that elusive cup of black coffee ( THAT KATE WOULD NOT ALLOW!!!!!) Mother is much healthier in body and mind and spirit. It is the swamp water broth or the beet juice and rudabegga medley? Perhaps so but only in combination with the uncionditional positive regard and the quiet gentle firm spirit that Kate is. So thanks Kate for coming and sharing, because we all know what it takes to step out of our everyday world and be of service to those who need us most.
